Patients living across central and eastern Washington now have access to same-day home delivery of prescription medications thanks to a partnership between Alaska Air Cargo and healthcare logistics specialist Phox Health.
The service combines Alaska Air Cargo’s GoldStreak Package Express next-flight-out network with Phox Health’s technology platform and specialized pharmaceutical logistics capabilities. The initiative is designed to transport temperature-sensitive and high-value medications, including cancer treatments and fertility drugs, directly from specialty pharmacies in Seattle to patients throughout the state.
Seattle-based Phox Health has integrated its software with Alaska Air Cargo’s transportation network, allowing patients to monitor their medication shipments in real time from the pharmacy to their doorstep. According to the company, between 70 and 90 patients each week in communities such as Yakima, Wenatchee and Spokane currently receive medications from healthcare providers including UW Medicine and Providence Swedish through GoldStreak shipments departing Seattle.
The program addresses a major challenge for patients who live far from specialty pharmacies concentrated in urban areas. Many of these medications require strict temperature control throughout transportation and often represent products worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Through the partnership, medications are flown across Washington and delivered the very same day while maintaining critical cold-chain standards.
“Washingtonians know the airline well, so to see that Alaska Air Cargo is part of their care is very profound,” said Dr. Amit Gir, founder of Phox Health. “Their meds are not leaving the state. Their meds are staying local, carried by an airline they already know and love.”
To preserve product integrity, Phox Health uses reusable temperature-controlled containers known as PhoxBoxes. These specially designed units maintain required temperatures throughout transit while providing a more sustainable alternative to traditional single-use packaging.
Once the medication reaches the patient, the container is returned through Alaska Air Cargo’s network back to the originating pharmacy, creating a circular logistics model that supports both efficiency and sustainability.
Gir highlighted the complexity of transporting specialty pharmaceuticals, describing the process as similar to shipping “a diamond ring that can melt.” The company’s delivery model ensures the cold chain remains intact until the medication is physically handed over to the patient.
“This cooler is opened up like a pizza delivery cooler, and we hand the patient their drug in a sealed bag,” he explained.
Today, most major healthcare providers in the Seattle metropolitan area utilize Phox Health’s services. The company is also evaluating opportunities to expand beyond Washington, including potential connections between healthcare providers and patients in Hawaii.
According to Gir, the mission remains focused on improving access for patients living long distances from the specialty pharmacies responsible for dispensing their treatments.
“It’s our belief that every patient deserves the best delivery experience for their medication no matter where they live,” he said.
For Alaska Air Cargo, the collaboration further expands the healthcare applications of its GoldStreak Package Express service, which guarantees shipments are available for pickup within one hour of arrival. The service is already widely used for transporting medical supplies, laboratory samples and other critical healthcare shipments throughout the airline’s network.
“When a customer chooses GoldStreak, they are trusting us with something they cannot afford to lose,” said Tony Dimeglio, Managing Director of Operations at Alaska Air Cargo. “People’s lives and livelihoods depend on us.”
The partnership reflects a broader evolution within healthcare logistics, as providers increasingly seek faster, more reliable methods of connecting patients in remote locations with essential specialty medications. By combining air freight capacity, advanced shipment visibility and reusable cold-chain packaging, Alaska Air Cargo and Phox Health aim to reduce delivery times while ensuring product integrity from pharmacy to patient.
