The City of Vancouver can move forward with plans to renew the Vancouver Aquatic Centre (VAC) after the B.C. Supreme Court dismissed a legal challenge questioning the authority of the city and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation to proceed with the project.

The ruling clears the way for the next phase of the facility’s renewal, according to the city, as the Vancouver Aquatic Centre approaches the end of its functional lifespan.

The legal challenge was filed by the Protecting our Vancouver Aquatic Centre Society.

Following the closure of the VAC earlier this summer, crews moved onto the site to begin preparations for the demolition of the existing building. The city now expects demolition work to get underway in early October.

The renewed aquatic centre is planned to provide a broader range of swimming, recreation and community facilities.

The new facility will include a 25-metre lap pool designed for both swimming and competitive events, as well as a dedicated diving tank featuring multiple board heights.

Plans also call for a leisure pool and wellness amenities, including a hot pool and sauna. The fitness room will be expanded and equipped with additional equipment.

The centre will also feature a multi-purpose room intended for community programs and events, along with accessible washrooms and change rooms.

The project is fully funded and will be delivered within an overall budget of $175 million.
