At dawn, dozens of trucks lined the access roads outside Rotterdam’s terminal gates. By noon, the story was the same in Hamburg, Antwerp, and Bremerhaven. Northern Europe’s ports are under strain again—this time, without a storm or a strike to blame.

Port authorities across the region are reporting longer vessel waiting times, increased yard congestion, and overflowed hinterland rail terminals. In Rotterdam, average container dwell times have surged by nearly 22% in the past week. Antwerp has paused new gate entries for certain carriers until backlog volumes clear.
What’s causing it? The list is familiar—labor shortages, missed feeder connections, inland terminal delays—but their convergence is making conditions particularly acute.
“Normally we manage peaks,” said Liselotte Vrancken, a shipping scheduler in Antwerp. “But right now, everything is delayed—and everything is connected.”
Freight forwarders are warning clients to expect delivery delays stretching up to four or five days for inland destinations. Shippers of time-sensitive goods, particularly electronics and perishables, are scrambling to reroute via smaller ports or redirect inland via trucking.
Knock-On Effects
The congestion is already impacting downstream operations. Intermodal hubs as far as Lyon and Poznań are receiving containers days late, throwing off warehouse staffing, rail schedules, and last-mile delivery commitments.
Some ocean carriers have begun issuing emergency congestion surcharges or skipping North European calls entirely in favor of Mediterranean ports.
