Hyundai targets 80% local sourcing in North America by 2030

The automaker plans to significantly expand its regional supplier base, aiming to source 80% of the parts used in North American vehicle production locally by 2030, compared with 60% today.

Hyundai Motor Co. is preparing to deepen the localization of its supply chain across key markets, with North America emerging as a major focus of the strategy. The company intends to increase the share of locally sourced components used in vehicles manufactured for the region to 80% by 2030, President and CEO José Muñoz said during the company’s 2026 CEO Investor Day last month.

The target represents a significant increase from the current level of 60%. Hyundai says the move is designed to reduce costs, strengthen supply stability and support the expansion of its vehicle lineup.

“We’ll identify and expand local supplier networks, which will secure supply stability, reduce logistics costs and mitigate regulatory exposure,” Muñoz said.

The company also plans to improve the utilization of its newer plants to lower fixed costs while optimizing manufacturing specifications and production processes. According to Muñoz, these measures should help Hyundai bring the cost structures of its major plants to the company’s best levels.

Localization becomes central to Hyundai’s growth strategy

Hyundai is placing greater emphasis on supply chain localization as it prepares to introduce more than 100 new products by 2030.

The company has already begun increasing domestic sourcing for vehicles sold in the United States. According to Hyundai’s Investor Day presentation, the share of parts sourced from U.S.-based suppliers for its Santa Fe and Tucson models has increased by more than 10 percentage points.

The expansion of Hyundai’s North American supplier network is also taking place alongside a broader increase in manufacturing capacity. The automaker expects to add 1.27 million units of global manufacturing capacity by 2030, including 500,000 units in the United States, according to an Aug. 26 press release.

This follows Hyundai’s announcement a year ago that it would invest $21 billion in U.S. operations.

India also targeted for higher local content

Hyundai’s localization strategy extends beyond North America. India is another key market where the automaker intends to increase the proportion of locally sourced content.

The company plans to source 90% of the content used in vehicle manufacturing in India by 2030.

Muñoz highlighted Hyundai’s three decades of experience in the country as an important advantage.

“We’ve been in India for 30 years learning what customers want and how to deliver in the most efficient way possible,” he said.

He also described India as “a factory for the world,” noting that Hyundai’s cost position in the country is more than 15% better than its global baseline.

Hyundai also targets lower EV material costs

Supply chain localization is only one part of Hyundai’s broader cost-reduction strategy.

The automaker is targeting a 30% reduction in material costs for its electric vehicles by 2030. Combined with greater localization and changes to manufacturing and vehicle design processes, the company expects to reduce its cost-to-sales ratio by three percentage points over the next few years, Muñoz said.

The strategy comes as manufacturers across several industries increase U.S. production and local sourcing to manage regulatory challenges, reduce costs and strengthen their supply chains.

Nissan, for example, is restructuring its U.S. operations around greater localization and smarter factories. The automaker appointed Victor Taylor as division vice president for U.S. manufacturing, supply chain management and production engineering, with the goal of strengthening that strategy.

Lenovo is also expanding regional manufacturing to reduce geopolitical exposure and improve supply chain resilience. Over the past two years, the computer manufacturer has doubled capacity at a North Carolina facility to meet growing demand for servers, Benjamin Massie, vice president of global supply chain, servers and storage, told Supply Chain Dive.

For Hyundai, the push toward local sourcing is therefore closely tied to its wider manufacturing expansion, cost-control objectives and efforts to build a more resilient supply network in its major markets.
