Konecranes has introduced two new technology developments designed to strengthen automation and improve operational reliability across container terminals, with a clear focus on safety, efficiency and digitalisation.

The Finnish cargo handling specialist is now offering fully automated gantry long-travel operations for mixed-traffic container yards. The solution applies to both newly built automated rubber-tyred gantry cranes (A-RTGs) and as a retrofit option for existing fleets.

Built on the company’s A-RTG 2.0 concept, the system enables driverless gantry movement without human supervision or the need for physically separated truck lanes. It relies on multiple safety layers, including long-range 3D LiDAR sensors and laser-based detection systems, to minimise collision risks while maintaining smooth operations in shared terminal environments.

As Konecranes technology director for port solutions Ville Mannari explained, the goal is to reduce manual workload while allowing operators to concentrate on higher-value tasks, without compromising safety in busy yard conditions.

Importantly, the system is designed in a modular way, meaning terminals can upgrade existing Konecranes A-RTGs without replacing entire crane units, making automation more accessible and cost-efficient.

Alongside this, Konecranes is also expanding its Predictive Services platform globally, extending coverage to rubber-tyred gantry cranes and rail-mounted gantry cranes. Until now, this system was mainly used on Gottwald mobile harbour cranes.

The predictive maintenance tool works through vibration sensors installed on key rotating components such as motors, gearboxes and bearings. The collected operational data is analysed and delivered through the company’s yourKONECRANES portal, helping maintenance teams detect potential faults before they develop into major breakdowns.

According to Konecranes, this approach can significantly reduce unplanned downtime, improve spe parts planning and lower overall maintenance costs compared to traditional reactive maintenance models.

Konecranes senior vice president for port services Nico Zamzow said the expansion reflects a broader strategy to strengthen the company’s digital and lifecycle services offering for global
