Commercial vehicle enforcement operations in Saskatchewan, Canada, and Missouri recently resulted in more than 100 trucks being placed out of service, highlighting the immediate operational impact of serious equipment and compliance violations.

Across the two enforcement efforts, authorities carried out nearly 200 inspections, focusing on brake defects, unsafe equipment and moving violations.

In Saskatchewan, highway patrol officers placed 103 commercial vehicles out of service during Operation Air Brake, a 72-hour inspection initiative conducted from Aug. 25-27, according to a news release issued by the Saskatchewan government.

Officers conducted 294 commercial vehicle inspections at the Beverly Weigh Scale near Swift Current. More than one-third of the vehicles inspected were placed out of service, with brake-related problems accounting for most of the violations.

Of the 103 vehicles removed from service, 62 had defects involving brake components or improper brake adjustment. An out-of-service designation indicates that a vehicle has a serious safety issue and cannot return to operation until the necessary repairs have been completed.

Operation Air Brake was carried out as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Week, a North American enforcement and education initiative dedicated to commercial motor vehicle brake systems.

Missouri patrol records 94 violations during 38 inspections

A separate enforcement operation in Missouri resulted in four commercial drivers and three vehicles being placed out of service.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division conducted the operation Sept. 1 along Interstate 70 in Cooper County, according to a Facebook post.

Troopers initially stopped 38 commercial vehicles for moving violations, including speeding, before carrying out 38 vehicle inspections.

The inspections uncovered 94 violations. Four drivers and three vehicles were subsequently placed out of service because of serious violations.

Among the more severe equipment violations was a trailer on which the brakes had been removed and the brake hose had been clamped shut, according to the patrol.

Why it matters

Targeted roadside inspections can quickly take trucks and drivers out of operation when serious violations are identified. The recent actions in Saskatchewan and Missouri demonstrate how inadequate maintenance and compliance issues can translate directly into operational disruptions for commercial carriers and drivers.
