Nebraska State Patrol troopers have seized nearly 20,000 pounds of drugs valued at more than $50 million after stopping a commercial truck on Interstate 80 in Dawson County.

The seizure followed a traffic stop on Friday, Sept. 4, during a commercial vehicle inspection. Troopers discovered marijuana, THC products and psilocybin products distributed across 27 pallets inside the trailer. Nebraska State Patrol officials described the operation as the agency’s largest drug interdiction by volume.

The Nebraska State Patrol announced the seizure on Monday, Sept. 14. The incident began at approximately 8 a.m. near mile marker 228, where a trooper stopped the semi and began a commercial vehicle inspection. During the inspection, the officer detected the odor of marijuana.

27 pallets carried nearly 20,000 pounds of drugs

A search of the trailer uncovered approximately 5,200 pounds of marijuana. Troopers also found about 13,600 pounds of THC products and another 1,000 pounds of psilocybin merchandise.

Combined, the substances weighed roughly 19,800 pounds.

The Nebraska State Patrol estimated the shipment’s street value at more than $50 million. The agency said its record designation was based on the sheer volume of drugs seized rather than their estimated monetary value.

Authorities did not provide individual values for the marijuana, THC products or psilocybin products.

Photographs released by the Nebraska State Patrol showed boxes and wrapped pallets stacked inside what appeared to be a warehouse-style cargo area.

Virginia driver arrested and charged

Troopers arrested 44-year-old William Gomez of Virginia following the discovery.

Gomez was booked into the Dawson County Jail. The charges listed against him include possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver.

Investigators have not disclosed where the shipment originated or where it was supposed to be delivered. Authorities have also not identified the motor carrier, the owner of the truck or the cargo declared for the shipment.

The Nebraska State Patrol told FreightWaves that the investigation remains ongoing and that it could not provide additional details at this time.

Commercial freight corridors remain vulnerable to criminal activity

The seizure highlights the potential for commercial transportation networks to be exploited to move extremely large quantities of illicit substances.

For motor carriers, the case underscores the risks associated with criminal organizations using legitimate freight infrastructure, commercial vehicles and transportation operations to move contraband across major interstate corridors.
