Norfolk Southern has expanded its intermodal network from the Port of Charleston, South Carolina, with the launch of a direct daily rail service to Huntsville, Alabama.
The new connection is designed to improve rail access to markets across the Southeast, extending the Port of Charleston’s reach into North Alabama and Middle Tennessee, according to a September 11 press release from SC Ports.
Rail already plays a significant role in the port’s cargo network, with 25% of SC Ports’ volume moving by rail. Through its intermodal connections, customers can also access major hubs in Atlanta; Birmingham, Alabama; Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Louisville, Kentucky, supporting faster connections across key regional markets.
SC Ports has continued to invest in infrastructure aimed at strengthening port operations and maintaining its competitiveness. Last year, the port completed a $55 million expansion of Inland Port Greer. The project increased cargo capacity by 50% and added 9,000 feet of rail, allowing the facility to handle longer trains more efficiently.
The port is also examining opportunities to improve maritime access. Last month, SC Ports signed an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to investigate potential channel deepening at its North Charleston terminal.
According to SC Ports President and CEO Micah Mallace, deepening the channel could support future cargo growth while helping shippers benefit from faster logistics.
Norfolk Southern already operates daily and overnight rail services to Inland Port Greer, which is strategically positioned along the I-85 corridor connecting Atlanta and Charlotte.
The new Huntsville service adds another link to that network, giving shippers in the Southeast an expanded rail connection between the Port of Charleston and inland markets.
