The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) applauds the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) decision to renew the Moratorium on Customs Duties on Electronic Transmissions at the recently concluded 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) in Abu Dhabi.
SIA President and CEO John Neuffer expressed relief and optimism, stating:
“While the WTO Ministerial Conference can be suspenseful, we’re grateful that trade negotiators reached an agreement to extend the Moratorium. This decision safeguards a cornerstone of the digital economy, supporting semiconductor supply chains, fostering global economic growth and innovation, and bridging the digital divide.”
Looking Ahead:
While the industry celebrates this victory, they recognize the need for further education regarding the Moratorium’s significance for businesses and policymakers. Therefore, the SIA advocates for permanent Moratorium status, ensuring stability and predictability crucial for continued innovation and growth in the digital age. The SIA remains committed to collaborating with governments and industry stakeholders to achieve this long-term goal.
