Swissport has appointed Torsten Wefers as head of cargo commercial Europe (CEMEAI), reinforcing its commercial leadership as the group continues to expand its cargo operations across the region.
Wefers brings more than 25 years of experience spanning airport management, cargo and logistics business development, e-commerce, network planning, air service development, sales, market analysis and interim management.
He took up the new role this month after spending four years at Liege Airport as vice president sales and marketing, where he oversaw the airport’s commercial and strategic development. Between December 2024 and earlier this month, he also served as chairman of the air cargo community association LGG Connect.
Before joining Liege, Wefers spent more than 18 years at Cologne Bonn Airport in a range of management positions. He concluded his time there as director of cargo, a role he held for more than two years.
His arrival comes as Swissport continues to invest heavily in its European network. Earlier this year, the company opened its first UK temperature-controlled cargo facility at London Heathrow, covering 2,694 sq m. It also launched a new 2,200 sq m cargo warehouse at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport.
Beyond infrastructure growth, Swissport has also advanced its sustainability agenda. In Switzerland, the company recently completed a ground handling operation using 100% electric ground support equipment, marking a decarbonisation first in the country.
