Baghdad — A main road through Iraq is open again for international freight. Trucks can now travel from Europe to the Gulf by land. The route passes through Iraq from the north to the south. It connects Turkey to Kuwait.
“We are reopening a trade road that existed for centuries,” said an Iraqi official on Thursday.
Shorter Transit Time
Before this, most shipments went by sea. That took more than 20 days. With the road, the trip now takes about 10 days. This saves time and money. Trucks carry food, equipment, and goods that must arrive quickly.
Fewer Stops
The corridor uses sealed trucks. Customs checks are minimal. Drivers report smooth border crossings. Local authorities say the road is safe. Convoys are watched. Patrols are active along the way.
Many transport companies have already used the road. More are planning to shift freight to land.
