Brussels Airport, United Airlines, and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at supporting pharmaceutical transport flows between Belgium and the United States.
The agreement provides for the creation of a dedicated pharmaceutical corridor between Brussels Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport, with aligned processes and a standardised flow between the two gateways.
On this route, United Airlines will act as the primary carrier. The airline currently operates a daily flight, mainly transporting pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
For Arnaud Feist, chief executive of Brussels Airport, the agreement underlines the importance of strong partnerships and a well-aligned cargo community. He said the initiative will help create a reliable pharmaceutical air cargo corridor with Washington Dulles while also recognising Brussels Airport’s expertise in pharma logistics and the strength of its wider ecosystem.
He added that by sharing best practices and exchanging knowledge, the three partners will be able to work more efficiently and further reinforce transatlantic pharmaceutical supply chains.
Belgium is currently the world’s fourth-largest exporter of pharmaceutical products, while pharmaceutical companies in Virginia are expected to continue investing in the state, opening the door to stronger transatlantic cargo flows in the sector.
Jason El Koubi, president and chief executive of VEDP, said international connectivity is critical to supporting the growth of Virginia’s advanced manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries. In his view, the partnership reflects the value of long-term collaboration in building resilient supply chains and expanding Virginia’s reach across Europe and beyond.
Chris Busch, vice president Americas for cargo at United Airlines, also stressed the importance of cargo within the airline’s business model. He said cargo remains an important contributor to revenue and profitability. While United is fundamentally a passenger airline, the opportunity to carry cargo on those flights directly supports the profitability and overall success of its network.
