In a significant stride towards environmental responsibility, American Airlines Cargo has markedly decreased its plastic waste through a strategic partnership with BioNatur Plastics. This collaboration, initiated in 2022, focuses on integrating biodegradable plastic products into the airline’s cargo operations, leading to substantial reductions in long-term plastic waste.
Notable Achievements in Plastic Waste Reduction
-
2022: The inaugural year of the partnership saw a reduction equivalent to 6.4 million plastic water bottles.
-
2023: Building on this momentum, the airline achieved a nearly 100% increase, reducing waste by the equivalent of 12.6 million plastic water bottles.
-
2024: Continuing its commitment, American Airlines Cargo further decreased plastic waste by the equivalent of 8.6 million bottles.
These milestones were accomplished by replacing traditional plastics with BioNatur’s biodegradable alternatives for items such as lower deck pallet covers, heavy-duty poly sheeting, stretch wrap, bottom sheeting, and plastic covers. Notably, BioNatur’s products are designed to biodegrade within eight to twelve years in landfill conditions, without breaking down into microplastics.
Expansion of Sustainable Practices
The airline has implemented the use of BioNatur plastics across most of its U.S. hubs, smaller domestic stations, and in regions like Latin America. Plans are underway to extend this eco-friendly initiative throughout all operational areas, underscoring a steadfast commitment to sustainability.
Greg Schwendinger, President of American Airlines Cargo, emphasized the impact of this initiative: “We have a strong and successful partnership with BioNatur Plastics, and I’m pleased to see how much our efforts to migrate more of our operations plastic use to their biodegradable products is helping us reduce our long-term waste and overall footprint.”
This proactive approach not only aligns with global environmental goals but also sets a benchmark in the aviation industry for sustainable operational practices.
