APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas, one of Mexico’s most advanced container terminals, has taken a significant step forward with the acquisition of 14 hybrid shuttle carriers as part of its Phase II expansion. This investment is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, reducing emissions, and increasing handling capacity to meet growing demand.

Key Features of the Hybrid Shuttle Carriers

  1. High Load Capacity:
Each carrier can handle up to 50 tonnes, ensuring efficient movement of heavy cargo within the terminal.
  2. Environmental Benefits:
Equipped with Stage V engines, these carriers are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 20%, supporting APM Terminals’ sustainability goals.
  3. Enhanced Operations:
The new equipment will optimize cargo handling, minimize waiting times for external trucks, and streamline logistics at the port.

Phase II Expansion Highlights

  1. Investment Scale:
With a total investment of $140 million, APM Terminals is increasing the port’s handling capacity by an additional 1 million TEU.
  2. Infrastructure Additions:
    • Six Automated Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) Cranes: For faster and more precise container handling.
    • 14 Shuttle Carriers: To improve internal cargo flow.
    • Four Empty Container Handlers: Dedicated to managing empty containers more efficiently.
  3. Technological Upgrades:
The terminal operating system (TOS) is being upgraded to Navis 4, enabling advanced data integration and operational optimization.
  4. Yard Expansion:
An additional 15.7 hectares are being developed, increasing the terminal’s annual capacity to 2.2 million TEU by 2026.

Strategic Importance

Located on key Pacific trade routes connecting Asia and the Americas, APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas plays a crucial role in facilitating international trade. This expansion not only strengthens its position as Mexico’s premier semi-automated container terminal but also enhances its contribution to global supply chain efficiency.

Leadership Perspective

Beatriz Yera, CEO of APM Terminals Mexico, remarked:
“This investment reflects our commitment to technological innovation and operational excellence while promoting sustainable development in Lázaro Cárdenas, a strategic port for Mexico.”

Looking Ahead

The Phase II expansion at APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas underscores a broader trend in the logistics industry: the integration of advanced technology and sustainability to meet increasing global trade demands. This move positions the terminal as a leader in operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.
