Chinese shipbuilder CSSC Huangpu Wenchong has secured new container vessel construction contracts from South Korea’s Namsung Shipping and Dongyoung Shipping, further expanding its presence in the East Asian shipbuilding market.
The agreements cover the construction of four container vessels: two ships with a capacity of 4,300 TEU and two feeder vessels of 1,900 TEU.
According to the shipyard, the orders represent the first collaboration between Huangpu Wenchong and the two Korean carriers and mark a significant step in strengthening partnerships with South Korean shipping companies.
The larger 4,300 TEU vessels were designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute. These ships are intended for ocean navigation and are capable of transporting a wide range of cargo types, including standard containers, refrigerated containers and dangerous goods.
The vessels comply with TIER III emission standards and are equipped with high-pressure selective catalytic reduction systems. Their design also anticipates the potential use of alternative fuels such as methanol, LNG and ammonia, reflecting the industry’s shift toward greener shipping technologies.
According to the shipyard, the ships’ energy-efficient design will reduce operating costs while enhancing environmental performance and commercial competitiveness.
The two 1,900 TEU feeder vessels belong to the shipyard’s independently developed “Honghu” series. These vessels feature low fuel consumption, high container load efficiency and flexible operational capabilities.
Huangpu Wenchong said the Honghu class has proven popular among shipowners worldwide and is particularly suited for regional feeder services connecting major hubs with smaller ports.
