Shipping giant CMA CGM is accelerating its air cargo ambitions with a strategic network expansion, aiming to connect key markets in Asia with North America. This move signifies a significant step forward for the company’s airfreight division, CMA CGM AIR CARGO.

Transpacific Bridge Established:

The centerpiece of the expansion is the launch of a new transpacific route. Starting in summer 2024, CMA CGM AIR CARGO will operate dedicated airfreight services between Hong Kong, Seoul, and Chicago. This strategic route leverages the company’s existing air cargo infrastructure while capitalizing on the high demand for airfreight solutions between these major economic hubs.

Fleet Bolstered for Global Reach:

To support this expansion, CMA CGM AIR CARGO has secured additional aircraft. The company has taken delivery of two Boeing B777-200F freighters, specifically designed for long-haul cargo operations. These additions join the existing fleet of three Airbus A330F freighters.

Furthermore, CMA CGM has announced plans to integrate eight Airbus A350F aircraft into its fleet by 2026. This next-generation freighter boasts superior fuel efficiency and a larger cargo capacity, allowing CMA CGM AIR CARGO to establish a truly global network.

Focus on Seamless Logistics:

The expansion aligns with CMA CGM’s broader strategy to offer comprehensive logistics solutions. By integrating airfreight services with its well-established maritime operations, CMA CGM aims to provide customers with a wider range of options and greater control over their supply chains.

Damien Mazaudier, CEO of CMA CGM AIR CARGO, stated, “The transpacific lane opening marks a turning point in our history. This new route allows us to offer even more destinations to our customers on major routes, ensuring flexibility and efficiency in their airfreight needs.”

Analysts See Continued Growth:

Industry analysts view CMA CGM’s air cargo expansion as a strategic move with significant potential. The growing demand for e-commerce and time-sensitive goods is expected to continue driving growth in the airfreight sector. With its established presence in ocean freight and strategic network development, CMA CGM is well-positioned to capture a larger share of this growing market.

The Future of CMA CGM AIR CARGO

The recent network expansion and fleet upgrades demonstrate CMA CGM’s commitment to becoming a major player in the global air cargo industry. As the company integrates its new assets and establishes new routes, the future of CMA CGM AIR CARGO appears bright, offering customers a wider range of options for their airfreight needs.
