Riga — The Freeport of Riga has launched a private 5G network to keep cargo ships and sea drones connected well offshore. The upgrade replaces older Wi‑Fi and 4G systems and covers distances of more than 100 miles.
“Our port now talks to ships in real time, even far out at sea,” said a LMT spokesperson.
Clear Signals, Bigger Reach
Ships and drones now share data instantly—everything from navigation to live video. Connection is handled through a 5G “multi-hop” system. Each vessel helps relay the signal to the next. The result: a strong, reliable network far from land.
Smarter Ports, Safer Seas
The port plans to open a remote operations center. Operators will manage traffic, monitor drones, and analyze data from inland. The rollout sets Riga apart as a hub for modern maritime logistics.
