GEODIS has taken a significant step forward in sustainable logistics by introducing a new reverse logistics service at its 55,000-square-meter site in Torija, Spain. The initiative reflects the company’s commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of its logistics operations and supporting e-commerce clients in managing the growing volume of product returns.

A Purpose-Built Facility for High-Volume Returns

Serving a major e-commerce customer, the Torija facility dedicates 3,000 square meters specifically to reverse logistics. The site has been engineered to manage high volumes of XL product returns, including large household appliances and other bulky items commonly sold online.

Reverse logistics is becoming increasingly critical as e-commerce continues to expand. Consumers now expect hassle-free returns, putting pressure on logistics providers to develop streamlined, environmentally responsible processes.

Streamlined Operations for Repair, Recycling, and Reuse

GEODIS has implemented a comprehensive return handling system that covers:

  • Product unloading and initial inspection
  • Classification and sorting based on condition
  • Routing of products to external repair or refurbishment centers
  • Coordination of removal, recycling, or liquidation for unsellable items

When disposal is necessary, GEODIS partners with certified providers that employ eco-friendly destruction techniques, maintaining strict compliance with environmental regulations.

Ivan Sanchez, Managing Director of GEODIS in Spain, commented: “Reverse logistics is essential for our clients as it allows them to improve customer satisfaction, reduce operational costs, and minimize environmental impact by optimizing the management of product returns, repairs, and recycling. Whenever possible, we systematically offer this support to our clients.”

Driving the Circular Economy in Logistics

This initiative is part of GEODIS’ broader strategy to promote the circular economy and embed sustainability into every level of its supply chain services. By rethinking how returns are processed and reused, the company is helping clients reduce waste and extend the lifecycle of consumer goods.

Conclusion: Meeting the Demands of Modern E-Commerce

GEODIS’ reverse logistics capabilities in Torija are a response to the shifting dynamics of e-commerce, where flexibility, efficiency, and sustainability are paramount. As returns continue to grow alongside online retail, GEODIS is positioning itself as a key enabler of sustainable value recovery and customer-centric logistics.
