February 26, 2025 – Global airfreight rates saw a decline last week, according to the latest data from TAC Index, the market-leading price reporting agency. The Baltic Air Freight Index (BAI00) recorded a 4.1% drop in the week ending February 24. However, despite concerns about tariffs and potential trade wars, rates remain 14.8% higher compared to the same period last year, keeping them in a stronger position than container shipping rates, which have seen more significant declines.
Regional Trends in Airfreight Rates
China and Asia
- Rates out of China declined on routes to both Europe and the U.S.
- The Hong Kong index (BAI30) dropped 1.4% week-on-week (WoW) but remains 19.5% higher year-on-year (YoY).
- Shanghai rates (BAI80) fell 3.7% WoW, yet held firm with the same 19.5% YoY increase.
- India saw falling rates for both Europe and the U.S.
- Vietnam’s airfreight rates to the U.S. were lower, while rates to Europe rebounded.
Europe
- Airfreight rates from Europe to China and the U.S. increased, though rates to Japan saw a slight dip.
- The Frankfurt index (BAI20) dropped sharply by 15.0% WoW, though it remains 9.2% ahead YoY.
- London Heathrow (BAI40) gained 5.2% WoW, maintaining an 8.2% YoY increase.
The Americas
- Chicago routes (BAI50) dropped 4.6% WoW, though they remain 2.0% higher YoY.
- U.S. airfreight rates declined across all major destinations, including Europe, China, and South America, though most remain positive YoY.
Outlook and Industry Implications
Despite the recent downturn in weekly airfreight rates, the market remains resilient compared to other freight sectors, particularly container shipping. While fears of trade disputes and economic uncertainty linger, the data suggests that yearly airfreight trends remain positive in most regions.
As the global logistics landscape evolves, industry stakeholders will continue to monitor shifts in demand, geopolitical impacts, and trade policy developments to navigate these fluctuations effectively.
