Khalifa Port, one of the fastest-growing maritime gateways in the Middle East, has taken a significant step in expanding its value-added services by signing a 10-year lease agreement with TW Steel, a specialist in modular building solutions. The move is set to transform the port’s infrastructure and container operations, enhancing turnaround times and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainable logistics.
A New Standard for Container Maintenance and Fabrication
The agreement grants TW Steel operational rights to develop and manage a container maintenance and fabrication facility within the port, offering full-service capabilities including structural repair, refrigeration unit maintenance, inspection, certification, and deep-cleaning. For shipping lines and logistics operators, this eliminates the need to transport containers off-site for refurbishment, ultimately reducing delays and transportation costs.
The partnership also introduces advanced fabrication options. TW Steel will produce modular structures from repurposed containers, offering configurations for mobile offices, medical stations, educational pods, and bespoke retail or residential applications—all constructed on-site.
Smart Logistics Meets Sustainable Innovation
The newly established hub aligns with the UAE’s vision for a greener, more technologically integrated supply chain. Fakher Darwish, General Manager of TW Steel, noted that the facility will utilize low-emission fabrication methods and advanced modular construction techniques to minimize environmental impact.
“Through our state-of-the-art modular technology, we are delivering energy-efficient solutions that improve port functionality and support global sustainability goals,” Darwish stated.
AD Ports Group’s Strategic Vision
The development reinforces Khalifa Port’s ambition to become a fully integrated logistics ecosystem. Saif Al Mazrouei, CEO of the Ports Cluster at AD Ports Group, emphasized that the deal showcases their commitment to innovation and operational excellence.
“We are delighted to collaborate with TW Steel to provide our customers with tailored, high-quality container services that extend far beyond traditional port functions,” said Al Mazrouei. “This is about redefining the role of the port as a solutions hub.”
Implications for Regional and Global Trade
As competition among global ports intensifies, value-added services like container repair and modular construction will become key differentiators. Khalifa Port’s initiative places it ahead of the curve in offering flexible, on-site solutions to its global partners.
Conclusion: Pioneering the Future of Port Services
With this strategic move, Khalifa Port not only strengthens its operational capabilities but also establishes a blueprint for future-ready ports. The on-site fabrication and repair facility is a game-changer—supporting efficiency, sustainability, and customer-centric innovation at the heart of the UAE’s logistics ecosystem.
