Maersk is sticking to its guns and keeping its vessels out of the Red Sea for now. This comes even as the European Union (EU) ramps up security measures in the region following attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
Since January 5th, when Maersk first paused Red Sea crossings, the company has rerouted ships around Africa’s southern tip via the Cape of Good Hope. The EU’s recent deployment of a naval mission aimed at deterring future attacks hasn’t swayed Maersk.
In a statement, Maersk acknowledged other shipping companies continuing or planning to resume Red Sea operations. However, the company emphasized its own risk assessment, highlighting that current conditions don’t justify resuming Red Sea crossings just yet.
This decision reflects Maersk’s strong focus on safety. The company is closely monitoring the situation and will only resume Red Sea traffic when it deems it safe for its crew, vessels, and cargo.
