The Suez Canal Authority (SCA), under the leadership of Chairman Osama Rabie, has expressed optimism regarding the resumption of normal shipping activities through the Suez Canal, despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Anticipated Recovery Timeline

Chairman Rabie indicated that, contingent upon the maintenance of the current ceasefire in Gaza, shipping traffic could begin to increase by late March, with a full recovery anticipated by mid-year. This outlook aligns with a recent survey by maritime research consultancy Drewry, where 54% of respondents believe that operations will normalize before the end of 2025, while 29% predict a resolution in 2026.

Impact on Container Shipping Capacity

The disruptions in the Red Sea have led to significant diversions, reducing effective container shipping capacity by approximately 9%. The anticipated reopening of the Suez Canal is expected to reintroduce this stranded capacity into the market, potentially affecting freight rates. Carriers may need to manage supply carefully to prevent rate declines.

Geopolitical Considerations

The situation remains closely tied to geopolitical events. The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas is described as precarious, with recent developments adding complexity to projections. For instance, U.S. political interventions have influenced the dynamics of the ceasefire, affecting the stability necessary for safe shipping operations.

Industry Sentiment

The survey conducted by Drewry gathered insights from over 300 participants, including shippers, freight forwarders, and port authorities. The majority of respondents anticipate that shipping lines will resume Suez Canal transits before the end of 2025, reflecting a cautious optimism within the industry.

Conclusion

While challenges persist due to regional tensions, the SCA’s proactive stance and the industry’s readiness to adapt suggest a pathway toward the normalization of shipping activities through the Suez Canal in the coming months.
