Rotterdam, July 24 — TotalEnergies and CMA CGM announced today the creation of a 50-50 joint venture to develop liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering services at the Port of Rotterdam, with operations scheduled to begin in 2028.
The partnership includes the construction of a 20,000-cubic-meter LNG bunkering vessel, while TotalEnergies has agreed to supply up to 360,000 tons of LNG annually to CMA CGM through 2040. “LNG is currently the most mature and readily available solution for reducing the carbon footprint of global shipping,” said Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies.
The initiative aligns with the European Union’s strategy to cut reliance on Russian gas by increasing LNG imports from the United States while advancing cleaner fuels for the maritime sector.
