Cook County investigators have recovered approximately $647,420 worth of Nike merchandise following a fraudulent pickup that used fake documents to obtain the shipment.

The incident began on Aug. 21 at a company facility in Memphis, Tennessee. According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, a driver collected the shipment, which was originally destined for Dallas, using fraudulent paperwork. Authorities later discovered that the cargo had instead been transported toward the Chicago area.

The investigation was launched after a Nike representative contacted the Sheriff’s Police Organized Retail Crime Unit on Aug. 23. Detectives immediately began examining the circumstances surrounding the fraudulent pickup that had taken place two days earlier.

Their investigation eventually led them to a distribution facility in Des Plaines, Illinois, where officers located the stolen Nike shoes along with a stolen trailer.

The recovery took place in the 1300 block of South Mount Prospect Road. Authorities have not yet identified the individuals responsible for the theft, and no arrests or criminal charges have been announced.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue working to determine who was responsible for the fraudulent operation.

Collaboration crosses jurisdictions

Cook County Sheriff’s Office Commander Michael Ware credited the successful recovery to cooperation among several organizations and sectors.

According to Ware, law enforcement agencies, retailers, transportation partners and private-sector organizations all contributed to the investigation. He described cargo theft as a sophisticated form of organized crime that frequently extends across multiple jurisdictions.

Ware said his team remains committed to disrupting criminal networks and protecting the broader supply chain.

“The recovery of approximately $647,420 in stolen merchandise demonstrates what can be accomplished through strong collaboration,” Ware told FreightWaves.

He also praised the work carried out by the Organized Retail Crime Unit and recognized Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart for supporting the unit’s efforts.

“His leadership has provided us with the resources and support necessary to pursue these complex investigations,” Ware told FreightWaves.

Investigators have not disclosed how the individual involved obtained the fraudulent paperwork, nor have police explained how the shipment ultimately reached Illinois.

Ware noted that because the investigation remains active, his office is limited in the information it can publicly release.

Why It Matters

The case highlights how fraudulent documentation can allow a criminal pickup to appear legitimate long enough for high-value freight to disappear from the supply chain.

When a shipment is diverted or goes off course, rapid communication between companies, carriers, law enforcement agencies and other supply chain partners can become critical to recovering the cargo.

CFCO

CFCO training emphasizes the importance of human-level verification before freight is released.

Documents alone cannot confirm that the person standing at the dock is legitimately connected to the shipment. Teams must verify the individual against trusted information before cargo leaves their control.

Do not discover the driver at the dock. Confirm the driver at the dock.
