Batrovci, 26. januara 2026. Dozens of truck drivers from the Western Balkans organized a massive blockade of freight terminals located at the borders between their countries and the European Union, protesting against rules limiting the stay of non-European drivers to 90 days in the Schengen area.

Since January 26, 2026, heavy-duty pylons have disrupted traffic at major border crossings, notably in Gevgelija (North Macedonia), disrupting an essential corridor for trade between the EU, Turkey, and the Middle East.

The protesters claim that the current residency limits do not take into account the operational reality of their transcontinental journeys, which often require longer periods of presence in the Schengen area than those allowed.

Several professional associations have pointed out that these restrictions risk jeopardizing not only the employment of drivers but also the fluidity of regional supply chains, causing delays and additional costs for shippers and carriers.

The authorities of Balkan and European countries have opened discussions to try to lift the blockades and restore the normal flow of freight, while reevaluating the entry rules that are under debate.
