Euroseas Orders Two High-Reefer Containerships From Huanghai Shipbuilding

The company is moving into a specialised reefer-heavy segment, betting on limited vessel availability and steady demand for refrigerated cargo capacity.

Euroseas has signed a contract with China’s Huanghai Shipbuilding for the construction of two 2,800 teu containerships specifically designed for high-reefer trades, in a move that reflects growing confidence in the refrigerated cargo market.

The two vessels will be built to EEDI Phase 3 and IMO NOx Tier III standards and will each feature more than 1,000 reefer plugs, giving them a strong competitive position in trades where demand for refrigerated transport remains firm. The ships are scheduled for delivery in June and August 2028 and will each cost $46.35 million.

The agreement also gives Euroseas the option to order up to four additional vessels of similar size within a short time frame. Those ships could be configured either as high-reefer units or in more conventional form, depending on market conditions.

Chairman and chief executive Aristides Pittas said the company sees the specialised high-reefer segment as an attractive niche, especially given the positive outlook for global refrigerated container shipping and the limited supply of modern vessels with substantial reefer capacity.

He described the order as a measured diversification strategy that supports both fleet growth and modernisation, while remaining aligned with Euroseas’ focus on disciplined investments designed to generate returns and strengthen long-term shareholder value.

The order signals that, despite broader uncertainty in container shipping, selected segments with strong cargo specialisation are still offering targeted expansion opportunities for owners willing to invest in modern tonnage.
