LATAM Cargo is taking a concrete step toward greener logistics by partnering with a forwarder and exporter to transport salmon using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
The initiative, involving Andes Integración Logística and AquaChile, resulted in a certified 10% reduction in CO₂ emissions for a three-tonne shipment between Chile and the United States.
While modest in scale, the project signals a broader shift within the air cargo industry toward measurable and verifiable decarbonization efforts.
The use of the “Book & Claim” mechanism allows companies to invest in SAF and claim emissions reductions, even when the fuel is not physically used on a specific flight—offering greater flexibility in scaling sustainability initiatives.
For exporters, particularly in South America, such solutions are becoming increasingly important as global markets demand lower carbon footprints across supply chains.
LATAM Cargo emphasized that this is not a one-off initiative, but part of a long-term strategy to expand SAF usage across multiple routes and product categories.
