Millions Face Flood Threat in China’s Guangdong Province After Heavy Rainfall

Millions of residents in China’s southern Guangdong province are facing a flood threat after days of heavy rain caused rivers and reservoirs to overflow.

The National Weather Service has issued a red alert, the highest level of warning, for several areas in the province. Local authorities report that water levels in major rivers, including the Xijiang and Beijiang, have reached record highs, exceeding levels typically seen only once in fifty years. Many hydrological stations are also recording water levels exceeding danger points.

The situation is particularly concerning in the provincial capital, Guangzhou, where a population of over 18 million people resides. City officials have announced that reservoirs have reached flood limits, raising concerns about potential dam overflows and inundation.

Evacuations Underway as Flood Risk Rises

The provincial government has enacted emergency response plans to protect the over 127 million people living in Guangdong. Nearly 60,000 residents have already been evacuated from their homes in flood-prone areas, and authorities are closely monitoring water levels and preparing for further evacuations if necessary.

Weather System Creates Widespread Problems

The heavy rainfall is attributed to a low-pressure system lingering over southern China. The system has brought widespread disruption across the region, with neighboring Guangxi province also experiencing severe weather events, including damaging winds.

Guangdong Prone to Flooding

Guangdong, located in the Pearl River Delta region, is particularly vulnerable to flooding due to its low-lying geography and extensive network of waterways. The potential for rising sea levels due to climate change further complicates the flood risk for the densely populated region.

Recovery Efforts Likely Extensive

The full extent of the damage caused by the heavy rain and potential flooding is still being assessed. However, initial reports suggest that infrastructure damage, agricultural losses, and property damage are all likely to be significant. Recovery efforts are expected to be extensive, requiring substantial resources from both the government and private sector.

The situation in Guangdong province continues to develop. Authorities are urging residents to stay informed about weather warnings and take necessary precautions to stay safe in the event of flooding.
