Container shipping companies from China and South Korea are expanding their presence on the Northern Sea Route (NSR), introducing new services between North Asia and North Europe as the Russian Arctic becomes increasingly navigable during the summer ice season.
The development is adding capacity to the Asia–North Europe trade and could provide carriers with an alternative routing option as operators continue to manage pressure on traditional maritime corridors.
Linerlytica highlighted the growing number of Arctic services announced during August, noting that several carriers are preparing to operate through the NSR during the current summer season.
“The start of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) season has seen a series of Arctic route services launched in August,” Linerlytica said in its weekly market report.
According to the analyst, South Korean carrier PanStar has joined Chinese operators Sea Legend, New New Shipping and OVP Shipping in offering additional capacity towards North Europe and Baltic Russia. The additional services are expected to help ease some of the pressure on available space along the trade.
Chinese carrier New Legend is also preparing to launch a series of sailings through the Arctic. The company plans to operate eight near-weekly voyages during the summer season under its Arctic Express Service (CAX).
The first voyage is scheduled to be operated by the Liberia-flagged Dubai Tower, a 1,740 TEU container ship. The vessel is due to depart Ningbo–Zhoushan on 15 August, marking the start of the service’s Arctic operations.
The growing number of services reflects increasing interest in the Northern Sea Route as seasonal ice conditions allow more commercial vessels to navigate the Arctic corridor.
For container carriers, the route provides another option for connecting Asian manufacturing centres with European markets. The emergence of multiple operators on the NSR also indicates that Arctic shipping is becoming a more visible component of capacity planning for the Asia–Europe container trade.
With Sea Legend, New New Shipping, OVP Shipping, PanStar and New Legend preparing or operating services through the route, the Northern Sea Route is gaining a larger role in the seasonal network planning of Asian container carriers.
