Geopolitical disruptions, longer sailing distances and tighter vessel availability continue to underpin both freight earnings and investor confidence, delivering exceptional returns in the tanker shipping market.

International Seaways (INSW) has clearly benefited from the strong market environment, reporting its highest quarterly net income in almost a decade.

Record profits lift investor confidence

The US-listed tanker company reported net income of $295 million, or $5.96 per share, in the second quarter. The company also announced its biggest quarterly dividend ever, $5.05 a share.

The results represent the strongest quarterly performance in the company’s nearly ten-year history, and the second consecutive quarter in which International Seaways declared a record dividend, CEO Lois Zabrocky said.

The results soon attracted increased investor interest. Shares in INSW jumped above $96 after the earnings announcement to levels that would have seemed stratospheric only a few months ago.

Shares have nearly doubled in value this year alone, easily topping the broader market. That’s about 12% in that time for the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Tanker markets continue to be reshaped by disruptions

The strong financial performance is indicative of broader trends in the tanker sector. “The world is facing multiple geopolitical disruptions that are changing traditional trading patterns, leading to vessels taking longer routes and increasing tonne-mile demand.

These changes have helped support freight rates and vessel earnings, while creating a good environment for tanker owners.

This, coupled with strong cash generation, higher dividends and increased earnings has also attracted more interest from investors, sending valuations and market cap across the listed tanker sector to historically high levels.

International Seaways’ latest results show how fast market conditions can turn into better financial performance for tanker operators when disruptions tighten capacity and increase voyage distances.
