Despite ongoing speculation over the strategic implications of the deal, Hapag-Lloyd remains confident of its planned acquisition of ZIM going thru before the end of 2026.
The German container carrier intends to acquire the Israeli shipping company for roughly $4 billion, funding the deal thru profits accumulated over recent years and a bridging loan.
ZIM deal on track
Hapag-Lloyd chief executive Rolf Habben Jansen said the company was still in discussions with the relevant authorities and expected the transaction to close toward the end of the year.
The deal has garnered strong support from ZIM shareholders with 97% voting in favor of the acquisition, giving Hapag-Lloyd confidence that the transaction remains firmly on track.
However, discussions are still ongoing regarding the Golden Share, which will remain with FIMI Opportunity Funds. ZIM’s strategic importance has raised questions among some Israeli officials about the special share arrangement.
Hapag-Lloyd, however, says it remains focused on completing the necessary regulatory and administrative steps.
ZIM Is More Than Expansion
The purchase is part of Hapag-Lloyd’s broader strategy to consolidate its position in the global container shipping market.
The company is also exploring other opportunities in the port sector, which indicates its expansion plans will not stop with the ZIM deal.
The strong earnings over the last five years combined with the continuing investment capacity give Hapag-Lloyd room for further growth.
The ZIM deal is a major step for the German carrier as it tries to cement its standing among the world’s leading container shipping companies, and other port investments could allow it to gain more control over important links in the supply chain.
