GRAND PRAIRIE, ALTA. – Albertans are being invited to have their say on how land in the Berland sub-region of northern Alberta should be managed to balance work, recreation, conservation and other uses.

The provincial government has released a draft sub-regional land-use plan and is accepting public feedback until Nov. 12. The consultation will help shape the final framework for the area, which covers 19,529 square kilometres southeast of Grande Prairie and extends to the southern boundary near Jasper National Park.

The Berland sub-region features a varied landscape of rolling hills, mountains, forests and glacial valleys. Its land supports a wide range of activities, including resource development, agriculture, recreation, tourism, forestry and traditional Indigenous land use.

Feedback gathered during the consultation will contribute to the final plan, which is expected to provide direction for activities such as forestry, grazing, recreation and energy development. It will also address caribou habitat restoration.

The provincial government emphasizes that the current document remains a draft and is intended to encourage public input before any final decisions are made. All feedback submitted during the consultation will be reviewed as part of the planning process.

As the sub-regional plans move toward finalization and implementation, Alberta’s government says it will continue working with Indigenous communities and organizations, local governments, industry and other stakeholders.
