Shanghai Pudong Int’l Airport Cargo Terminal Co., Ltd. (PACTL) has renovated and relocated its Cross-border E-commerce Handling Center at PACTL WEST Terminal, and the upgraded center is officially put into operation.

The project is the first major milestone in PACTL WEST’s broader upgrade program and aims to improve operational capabilities, increase the efficiency of services and support the ongoing growth of air cargo services.

The rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce is putting air cargo handling facilities under pressure to increase capacity, streamline process, improve operational visibility and reinforce coordination between stakeholders across the supply chain.

PACTL WEST has renovated its Cross-border E-commerce Handling Center in response to these changing market requirements, with an optimized operational layout, improved handling processes and the integration of digital solutions for more efficient cargo flows.

PACTL WEST has relocated its improved Center to the outbound area from inbound area. The total floor area has been increased to some 4,170 square meters, 40 per cent more than the former site.

The newly designed facility features specific operational areas for cargo unloading, outbound storage, security screening and customs inspection that help to streamline and improve the efficiency of outbound handling operations.

We have also implemented new handling and inspection systems that offer more operational flexibility and allow e-commerce shipments to be processed safely and reliably. The upgrade has doubled the amount of material the facility can process per day compared to the former center.

The project also puts a high priority on digitalization. Upgraded center has strengthened the information connectivity and data sharing of the whole cargo handling process through the integration of data interfaces between different operational systems.

An operational dashboard has been visualized to give a complete overview of the key operational data, so the management can use the available resources in a better way and operate more efficiently.

The system is designed to provide multi-dimensional, real time data displays to improve operational transparency and enable improved decision making.

The improved digital infrastructure also means more control over outbound processes, thanks to automated verification mechanisms. The system checks the status of the sorting and controls the release of the shipment during release.

This ensures that parcels that have not been through all the required handling procedures do not go out for delivery which improves operational accuracy, security and traceability throughout the e-commerce handling process.

“The upgrade of the Cross-border E-commerce Handling Center is another example of our commitment to improve infrastructure capacity and operational efficiency. “We are constantly enhancing our capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the air cargo industry through optimized processes, improved facilities and digital solutions to provide more reliable and efficient services to our customers and partners,” said Carsten Hernig, Deputy General Manager of PACTL.

The upgrade of the Cross-border E-commerce Handling Center is the first major milestone in PACTL WEST’s wider modernization program.

Future investments and upgrades will focus on cold chain handling, automated cargo handling systems and information technology systems.

With continued investment in world class infrastructure and digital transformation, PACTL aims to continuously enhance operational efficiency and deliver quality cargo handling services to its customers and partners.
