KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops is set to receive more than 800 additional skilled-trades training seats, expanding access to apprenticeship and trades programs across the region.
The expansion is part of British Columbia’s Look West strategy, which includes a commitment to deliver 5,000 new trades-training seats throughout the province during the 2026-27 year.
With the additional capacity, the total number of trades-training seats available at TRU will rise to nearly 2,400 this year.
The new seats are intended to address several workforce and training needs. They will help reduce wait lists for in-demand apprenticeship programs, allowing workers to complete their required training sooner.
The increased capacity will also create opportunities for more young people and individuals considering a career change to explore skilled-trades pathways.
Training will be expanded in a range of occupations where demand remains high. These include automotive service technician, carpenter, construction craft worker, construction electrician, heavy mechanical trades, industrial mechanic (millwright), instrumentation and control technician, plumber, refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic, saw filer and welder.
The additional seats are therefore aimed at strengthening access to trades training while increasing the number of workers able to enter or advance in occupations identified as being in high demand.
