REGINA – Saskatchewan recorded the strongest year-over-year growth in housing starts among Canadian provinces in August 2026, according to the latest data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
Housing starts in the province increased by 65.5 per cent compared with August 2025. Saskatchewan has now ranked either first or second nationally for year-over-year growth in housing starts for three consecutive months, according to a provincial release.
The increase was particularly pronounced in multi-unit housing construction. Starts in this segment rose by 116.7 per cent between August 2025 and August 2026.
Housing starts measure the number of new housing projects where construction has begun.
The province’s housing performance comes alongside broader economic growth. Statistics Canada’s latest Gross Domestic Product figures show that Saskatchewan’s real GDP reached a record $85.4 billion in 2025.
That represented a 2.2 per cent increase, putting Saskatchewan ahead of the national average growth rate of 1.7 per cent, the release said.
Private capital investment also posted strong gains in 2025. Investment in the province increased by 12 per cent to $13.6 billion, giving Saskatchewan the highest level of private capital investment among the provinces.
