Frankfurt Airport recorded a 2.5% year-on-year increase in cargo traffic in September 2026, handling a total of 174,773 metric tonnes of airfreight and airmail, according to traffic statistics published by airport operator Fraport.
The latest figures extend the airport’s recent growth trend. In August 2026, cargo volumes had already risen by 2.9% compared with the same month a year earlier, reaching 179,400 metric tonnes of airfreight and airmail. Despite the positive cargo performance, accumulated maximum take-off weights declined by 1.2% year-on-year in September.

In addition to the monthly traffic figures, the Cargo Development team at Fraport is constantly developing the expansion of Frankfurt Airport’s cargo business. The team works with airport partners to build infrastructure, digitalization, operational process improvements and cargo marketing to strengthen the airport’s position as an airfreight hub.
This work is also helped by a change in the leadership. In September 2026, Felix Toepsch was appointed Vise President Cargo Development at Fraport AG and took over responsibility for the further development of the airport’s cargo business.
Toepsch began his career with Fraport in 2013 and has worked in a number of areas, including business development, process development and innovation projects. Prior to this appointment, he was Executive Director of Air Cargo Community Frankfurt since January 2023.
At Air Cargo Community Frankfurt, Toepsch was in touch with more than 115 companies along the airfreight process chain. His responsibilities included supporting the standardization of cargo processes, in particular through initiatives like a common-use truck slot booking system aimed at improving coordination within the cargo community.
Fraport’s Cargo Development team is responsible for the implementation of the airport’s CargoHub masterplan. The program strives to optimize utilization of cargo space, extend and upgrade infrastructure and implement digital solutions and process innovations across Frankfurt Airport’s cargo operations.
September cargo volumes continue to grow as Fraport pursues both operational development and infrastructure improvements to support the airport’s longer-term cargo strategy.
