Maersk Completes Order for 20 Dual-Fuel Container Vessels

A.P. Moller – Maersk, a global leader in shipping and logistics, has finalized agreements with three shipyards to construct 20 state-of-the-art dual-fuel container vessels. This bold investment reflects Maersk’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime industry.

Fleet Renewal with a Sustainable Focus

The new vessels, featuring advanced dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol and liquefied natural gas (LNG), will have a combined capacity of 300,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). Ranging in size from 9,000 to 17,000 TEU, these ships are designed to provide operational flexibility and cater to diverse deployment needs in Maersk’s global network.

The delivery timeline spans from 2028 to 2030, with the first vessels scheduled to enter service in 2028. This order is part of Maersk’s broader fleet renewal strategy, which aims to modernize its fleet while significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Charter Contracts for Sustainable Growth

In addition to the newbuild order, Maersk has secured charter contracts with tonnage providers for an additional 500,000 TEU capacity. These chartered vessels will also feature dual-fuel capabilities, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals and replacing older, less efficient tonnage within its fleet.

A Step Towards Decarbonization

This investment is a testament to Maersk’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions across its operations by 2040. By integrating dual-fuel technology, Maersk is enhancing its ability to transition to greener fuels, paving the way for a more sustainable future in global shipping.

The dual-fuel engines are a vital component of Maersk’s decarbonization roadmap, providing the flexibility to operate on conventional fuels while gradually shifting to alternative, low-carbon options like methanol and LNG.

Strengthening the Industry’s Future

With this significant order, Maersk is reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable shipping. These vessels represent a critical step in the evolution of the maritime industry, combining cutting-edge technology, operational efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

As the shipping sector faces increasing pressure to decarbonize, Maersk’s proactive approach serves as a benchmark for the industry, demonstrating that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.

Stay tuned to The Logistic News for more updates on sustainability and innovation in the logistics and maritime sectors.
