CMA CGM Group is preparing to significantly expand the capacity of the Gemalink container terminal in Vietnam, with the southern Cai Mep facility set to reach around 3 million teu once the project is completed by the end of 2027.
Gemalink is a joint venture with Gemadept, in which CMA CGM holds a 25% stake. The group said the expansion marks a new milestone in the development of its port infrastructure in Southeast Asia and underlines its long-term commitment to the region.
Today, Gemalink handles 1.7 million teu a year and is already operating at full capacity. Since entering service in 2021, the terminal has established itself as one of the most efficient facilities in both the Vung Tau region and Vietnam more broadly. CMA CGM said performance has been supported by strong customer confidence and the regular deployment of its own shipping services.
The expansion project will include a 450-metre extension of the existing quay, delivered in two parts. The container yard will also be enlarged from 32 hectares to 44 hectares. In addition, five new ship-to-shore cranes will be acquired, bringing the total to 13 units, alongside new yard equipment.
CMA CGM said the project will enable the terminal to support the continued growth of import-export flows in a region that plays a central role in Asian supply chains.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Gemalink Phase 2, Christine Cabau Woehrel, executive vice president of the CMA CGM Group in charge of Operations and Assets, said the expansion reflects both the group’s long-term commitment to Vietnam and its strong relationship with Gemadept, built on trust and shared ambition. She said the additional capacity would help strengthen Vietnam’s position in global supply chains and support the country’s ambition to become a leading maritime logistics hub in Southeast Asia by 2050.
CMA CGM has been active in Vietnam since 1989 and currently operates five offices in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Haiphong, Danang and Quy Nhon. The group runs 29 weekly services across seven Vietnamese ports and connects the country to major global destinations through an intermodal network supported by CEVA Logistics.
