In a move that signals its deepening investment in Europe and commitment to more sustainable logistics, FedEx Express has officially opened a new state-of-the-art logistics facility in Amsterdam, located just minutes from Schiphol Airport—one of Europe’s busiest air cargo hubs. The new site represents a significant upgrade in capacity, technology, and environmental stewardship, setting the tone for what FedEx describes as its “next-generation last-mile optimization strategy”.
The 16,000-square-meter facility—double the size of its predecessor—is built for speed, resilience, and long-term scalability. It now connects directly to the company’s road hub in Duiven, which acts as a nerve center for FedEx’s extensive European network, reaching 45 markets with improved reliability and faster delivery times.
Triple Throughput, Triple Efficiency
With the ability to process 4,500 packages per hour, the new Amsterdam site has tripled its sorting capacity. The system also features smart customs detection, automatically flagging shipments that require customs checks and expediting clearance procedures. This efficiency translates into earlier vehicle dispatch times, improved cut-off windows for customers, and faster delivery turnarounds—especially for businesses operating on tight shipping schedules.
“With this new facility, we’re not just increasing capacity—we’re redefining service speed and predictability for our customers across the Netherlands and Europe,” said Marius Penninks, Vice President of Network Operations at FedEx Europe. “It’s a cornerstone of our future-ready logistics strategy.”
Investing in the People Behind the Parcels
The expansion isn’t only about machines. FedEx has gone to great lengths to make the facility ergonomically friendly and climate-conscious for its employees. From advanced lighting systems to temperature controls, boom conveyors, and regular safety training, the facility emphasizes worker well-being and efficiency at every turn.
This aligns with a growing trend among logistics leaders to recognize that operational performance is as much about empowering staff as it is about deploying automation and AI.
Powering Toward 2040: A Greener FedEx
Sustainability is another defining feature of the new Amsterdam site. As part of FedEx’s global ambition to reach carbon-neutral operations by 2040, the facility includes twenty electric vehicle charging stations, with infrastructure already in place for further expansion. The integration of energy-efficient lighting, eco-conscious building materials, and smart energy systems reflects a broader shift across the company’s European infrastructure.
“FedEx isn’t just delivering packages—we’re delivering on our promise to support a cleaner logistics ecosystem,” Penninks emphasized.
