The takeover brings Jericoacoara Airport into the Fortaleza concession through 2047, with Fraport planning a three-year modernisation programme as passenger traffic continues to grow.

Fraport Brasil S.A. Aeroporto de Fortaleza has officially taken over the operation of Jericoacoara Airport (JJD) in northeastern Brazil, adding another regional gateway to Fraport AG’s growing presence in the country.

The airport is now the third Brazilian facility operated by Fraport AG, alongside Fortaleza Airport (FOR) and Porto Alegre Airport. The latest addition follows the award of the Jericoacoara concession through the Brazilian government’s AmpliAR programme, which enables regional airports to be incorporated into existing airport concessions.

Under the new arrangement, Jericoacoara Airport has been integrated into Fraport’s existing concession for Fortaleza Airport. The concession runs until 2047 and covers the operation of the passenger terminal as well as additional landside and airside facilities, including retail areas and parking infrastructure.

Fraport Brasil has also committed to modernising Jericoacoara Airport over the next three years, with the investment programme aimed at supporting the airport’s future growth and improving its role as an access point to one of Brazil’s major tourism regions.

Andreea Pal, Chief Executive Officer of Fraport Brasil, said the addition of Jericoacoara strengthens the company’s existing airport portfolio while creating further development opportunities within the Fortaleza concession.

“With our planned modernization measures, we are laying the foundation for sustainable growth, strengthening connectivity to one of Brazil’s most popular holiday destinations, and promoting economic and tourism development in the region,” Pal said.

Jericoacoara is located near one of Brazil’s most visited national parks and is particularly well known for its wide beaches, extensive sand dunes and striking lagoons. The area’s regular trade winds have also made it a popular destination for kite- and windsurfers. The destination is commonly known simply as “Jeri”.

Passenger demand at the airport has been growing steadily. Jericoacoara Airport handled approximately 260,000 passengers in 2025, representing a 23 percent increase compared with the previous year.

The airport operates a single runway measuring 2,200 by 45 metres and currently serves Brazil’s three major airlines: LATAM, GOL and Azul.

Fraport AG has maintained a presence in Brazil since 2017, when it began operating Fortaleza and Porto Alegre airports under separate concessions. Since then, the German airport operator has focused on modernising and further developing both facilities.

With Jericoacoara now incorporated into the Fortaleza concession, Fraport is expanding that experience to another strategically important airport, strengthening connectivity to a major Brazilian tourism destination while preparing the facility for further development over the coming years.
