Panama Canal postpones planned October Neopanamax draught reduction

Better-than-expected water levels allow the Panama Canal to maintain the current 14.63-metre limit, despite planned reductions in daily transits

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has postponed a previously announced reduction in the maximum authorised draught for vessels using the Neopanamax Locks.

The draught limit was scheduled to fall from 14.63 metres to 14.48 metres Tropical Fresh Water (TFW) on 1 October 2026. However, following its latest assessment of Gatun Lake water levels and updated weather projections, the ACP said on Friday that the reduction will not take effect as planned.

For the time being, vessels transiting the Neopanamax Locks will therefore continue to operate under the existing maximum authorised draught of 14.63 metres (TFW).

According to the ACP, maintaining the current limit will provide customers with greater continuity when planning voyages and deploying vessels. The decision also reflects the Canal’s approach of adapting to changing water and weather conditions while maintaining safe, efficient and reliable operations.

The postponement of the draught reduction does not affect the other measures already announced by the Canal.

Daily transit capacity has been reduced from 36 to 34 vessels as of 4 September. A further reduction is scheduled for 15 September, when the number of daily transits will fall to 32.

The Panama Canal will continue to monitor water conditions and weather developments closely. The ACP said it will provide advance notice of any future changes that could affect vessel draught requirements.

The ongoing monitoring is part of the Canal’s broader effort to provide customers with a predictable and efficient service while responding to changing environmental conditions.
