Operations have officially begun at the upgraded container terminal in Jubail Commercial Port, marking another infrastructure milestone for Saudi Arabia’s transport and logistics strategy. The project, developed under a concession agreement between Mawani and Saudi Global Ports Company, represents a $53 million investment.
Under the redevelopment programme, the terminal’s quay length has been extended from 1,000 to 1,400 metres and berth depth increased from 14 to 18 metres. Annual handling capacity has risen from 1.5 million teu to 2.4 million teu across a site covering 460,000 square metres.
New equipment has also been deployed, including four ship-to-shore cranes, up to 10 STS cranes and 16 RTGs, taking the total number of RTG units from 13 to 29. Mawani said some of these are automated and environmentally friendly. The upgraded terminal is designed to handle next-generation container vessels more efficiently.
Transport and logistics minister Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser said the opening reflects continued confidence from the private sector and supports Saudi Arabia’s ambition to position itself as a global logistics hub linking three continents under Vision 2030.
