A vessel has been reported on fire in the Strait of Hormuz, adding to ongoing concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors.

According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), military authorities reported that the incident occurred approximately eight nautical miles northwest of Kuzmar, Oman. The organization said the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, and investigations are continuing.

At the time of the report, no additional information regarding the vessel, its crew or the extent of the damage had been released.

The UKMTO urged all vessels in the area to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any suspicious activity while authorities continue to assess the situation.

The incident comes as the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz grows ever more volatile.

As of 19 July, the Joint Maritime Information Centre (JMIC) has documented 11 attacks by Iran against commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz since 25 June, and continues to rate the regional threat level as Severe, signifying that the probability of deliberate hostile action remains very high under the present conditions.

“Recent confirmed incidents confirm that maritime security continues to decline, with vessels still being subject to attack, Iranian authorities’ hailing and routing pressure. Ships that are broadcasting active Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals are seen as particularly vulnerable by the current threat environment,” said JMIC.

The fresh fire highlights the persistent risks facing commercial shipping in the Gulf region, where operators are keeping up stepped-up security precautions as they watch developments that could further upset one of the world’s busiest energy and trade routes.
