Walmart plans to permanently close its fulfilment centre in Matteson, Illinois, with operations set to move to other facilities in its NextGen logistics network.
According to a WARN notice filed on 27 March, the closure will affect 111 employees. Those who do not secure another role within the company will see separations take effect on 29 May.
The retailer said affected workers may qualify for a US$7,500 incentive if they transfer to open positions at selected facilities, while some may also be eligible for relocation support. Associates will also have access to other assistance measures. During a 90-day paid transition period, they will be able to apply for jobs at Walmart stores, Sam’s Club locations or other company sites and may qualify for a one-time transition payment.
The closure follows Walmart’s broader evolution of its fulfilment network. The company previously announced plans to shut a facility in Worcester, Massachusetts, and has continued investing in large, high-tech NextGen centres. Walmart first outlined plans for four such sites in 2022 and is now working on a fifth, due to open this year.
In the company’s view, these newer sites offer a redesigned working environment for staff while also incorporating advanced automation to support fulfilment efficiency.
