A shipment declared as leeks turned out to be concealing more than $10 million worth of suspected methamphetamine at the Texas-Mexico border.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers intercepted a tractor-trailer arriving from Reynosa, Mexico, at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility in Texas and discovered 395 packages of suspected methamphetamine hidden within the shipment.

According to CBP, the narcotics had an estimated value of $10.75 million.

The seized packages weighed a total of 1,204.82 pounds, or approximately 546.5 kilograms. Authorities confiscated both the suspected drugs and the tractor-trailer involved in the operation. Special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) have since launched a criminal investigation.

Officials did not identify the driver or announce whether any arrests had been made.

Secondary inspection exposes suspected narcotics

CBP officers encountered the commercial vehicle on Aug. 22 at the Pharr International Bridge, a key crossing connecting Pharr, Texas, with Reynosa, Mexico.

The tractor-trailer was referred for a secondary inspection after arriving at the cargo facility. During the examination, nonintrusive inspection equipment detected anomalies inside the trailer.

A canine team was subsequently deployed and alerted officers to the possible presence of narcotics, according to CBP.

Officers then carried out a physical inspection of the cargo area, ultimately uncovering the 395 packages concealed within the shipment manifested as leeks.

Authorities did not disclose exactly how the packages had been hidden among the cargo.

Port director praises CBP officers

Pharr Port Director Carlos Rodriguez praised the officers involved in the seizure, highlighting what he described as their continued success in disrupting smuggling attempts at international crossings.

“Our officers continue to be on a streak of success,” Rodriguez said. “The efforts of our CBP officers continue to be illustrated with massive disruptions of smuggling attempts at our international crossings.”

CBP did not provide additional details regarding the suspected trafficking operation.

The agency also did not identify the carrier, shipper, consignee or customs broker associated with the shipment. Authorities have not revealed the intended destination of the suspected methamphetamine.

From this point, Homeland Security Investigations will lead the criminal investigation.

CBP has not announced whether investigators have linked the seizure to other narcotics interdictions or broader trafficking networks.

Why It Matters

For freight and logistics professionals, the case serves as another reminder that legitimate cargo descriptions can potentially be used to conceal serious criminal activity.

Border inspections, accurate cargo documentation and shipment-level scrutiny remain critical components of supply-chain security. The seizure also highlights the role of advanced inspection technology, canine units and physical examinations in identifying suspicious cargo moving through major international freight corridors.
