Germany’s Hahn Airport is off to a flying start in 2025, reporting strong growth in both passenger traffic and cargo volumes during the first quarter of the year. Operated by TRIWO, the airport welcomed more than 440,000 passengers between January and March — a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2024. On the cargo side, Hahn handled approximately 22,000 tons of air freight, marking an 8% year-on-year gain.

“The year 2025 has gotten off to a good start,” said Rüdiger Franke, Managing Director of TRIWO Hahn Airport, expressing optimism about the airport’s momentum in both passenger and freight operations.

Passenger Growth Driven by Airline Expansion

Franke attributes the passenger boost to increased airline activity. “The airlines have expanded their services at Hahn Airport,” he noted. The recently launched summer flight schedule, effective since March 30, is expected to build on this trend. TRIWO is targeting 2.2 million passengers for the full year — an ambitious yet increasingly plausible goal given the current trajectory.

To accommodate this surge, Hahn Airport is investing in a comprehensive terminal modernization. Central to these plans is the redesign and centralization of the security checkpoint, aimed at optimizing passenger flow and improving the overall travel experience.

Cargo Operations Benefit from 24/7 Accessibility

Cargo also remains a pillar of Hahn Airport’s operations. The 8% uptick in tonnage during Q1 was supported by the airport’s strategic advantage: its 24-hour operating permit. This around-the-clock accessibility continues to attract freight operators seeking flexibility and efficiency.

Still, Franke struck a note of caution regarding future prospects in the cargo sector. “It remains to be seen how the current geopolitical uncertainties will affect the cargo business,” he said, referencing the broader global economic landscape and potential disruptions in trade routes and supply chains.

Digital Transformation in Motion

In tandem with its physical infrastructure upgrades, Hahn Airport is also prioritizing digitalization. Key innovations include the rollout of self-drop-off terminals, which aim to streamline check-in and reduce waiting times — a move aligned with industry-wide shifts toward automation and improved passenger autonomy.

Positioned for Sustainable Growth

With a firm commitment to infrastructure, technology, and operational excellence, Hahn Airport is positioning itself as a regional hub for both passenger and cargo traffic in western Germany. As competition among mid-sized European airports intensifies, TRIWO’s focused investment strategy and responsive management are helping Hahn remain both competitive and resilient.

The first-quarter results suggest that 2025 could be a transformative year for the airport — one defined by modernization, digital readiness, and the successful balancing of commercial aviation’s dual engines: passenger service and cargo logistics.
