In a bold step to elevate the standards of airmail logistics in Europe, Swiss WorldCargo, the airfreight arm of SWISS, has entered into a landmark collaboration with FIEGE Air Cargo Logistics, marking a new chapter in Zurich Airport’s mail handling capabilities.
The partnership was formally inaugurated on March 3, 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of a state-of-the-art mail handling facility. Operated by FIEGE, the new setup aims to significantly enhance the efficiency, reliability, and speed of the SWISS Mail product, underlining both companies’ shared commitment to quality and innovation in cargo logistics.
Transforming Mail Logistics with Operational Excellence
The Zurich-based facility introduces a modernized operational model that streamlines mail flows and reduces transit times. One of the most immediate impacts is the extension of operating hours, now running from 05:00 to 21:00 CET daily. This ensures more consistent and timely processing of inbound mail shipments, directly benefiting both private and commercial customers.
A key innovation of the new system is the reduced minimum connection time to six hours, allowing same-day European delivery for incoming mail shipments that land before 17:00 CET. These improvements enable not just faster mail distribution within Europe, but also optimized connectivity to late evening intercontinental flights, making Zurich a more strategic hub for international airmail logistics.
A Strategic Collaboration with Shared Vision
“Collaborating with reliable and innovative partners is one way to make progress possible,” noted Alain Chisari, Head of Swiss WorldCargo. “We are very enthusiastic to be partnering with FIEGE Air Cargo Logistics to further enhance our mail handling procedures. By combining our strengths, we are not only developing our services further but also creating new opportunities to deliver greater value to our customers.”
FIEGE brings to the table decades of expertise in air cargo handling, automation, and digitalisation—skills that align perfectly with Swiss WorldCargo’s own high-value, time-critical freight services. This synergy forms the foundation for a logistics partnership that is not just operational but also strategic in nature.
“We are very grateful for the trust Swiss WorldCargo has placed in us,” said Benjamin Looser, Managing Director at FIEGE Air Cargo Logistics. “With our expertise and focus on innovation, we will jointly develop airmail handling in Zurich and create added value for Swiss WorldCargo’s customers.”
Building a Scalable, Future-Proof Mail Solution
The move is also part of a broader strategy by Swiss WorldCargo to solidify Zurich as a central European logistics node. By rethinking airmail processing and enhancing collaboration between airline and ground handling experts, the partnership with FIEGE positions Zurich Airport to compete more aggressively in a rapidly evolving logistics environment.
Beyond improved service quality, the partnership is expected to deliver cost efficiencies and greater resilience in the face of rising global shipping demands and volatile transit patterns.
As both companies look to the future, their focus remains on continuous improvement, digital integration, and customer-centric innovation—a combination that is likely to shape the next generation of mail logistics in Europe.
