Hong Kong, July 25 — Container carriers are bracing for widespread schedule disruptions as a powerful typhoon approaches the South China coastline, prompting port authorities in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou to halt vessel operations and suspend terminal services.
“All berthing and loading operations have been temporarily suspended,” said Raymond Leung, operations manager at a Hong Kong terminal. “Safety protocols take priority, but the backlog this will create is significant.”
Ripple effects on global trade
South China is a critical gateway for electronics, apparel, and manufactured goods bound for North America and Europe. Even short closures can cascade into weeks of vessel delays, missed feeder connections, and higher costs for shippers.
“Every hour the terminals stay closed magnifies downstream congestion,” Leung explained. “We’re already advising clients to expect delivery delays and potential rate adjustments.”
Carriers reroute and adjust schedules
Major shipping alliances are diverting some vessels to alternate ports in northern China and Vietnam, though those hubs are also nearing capacity as diversions mount.
“This is peak season, so every disruption hits harder,” Leung noted. “The priority is minimizing the impact while keeping supply lines moving.”
