Hengli Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of the Hengli Heavy Industry group, continues its offensive in the global shipbuilding market with the signing of a contract for two Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLAC) of 93,000 m³.
On February 24, Hengli had already secured an order for two Capesize bulk carriers from an undisclosed European shipowner. Shortly after, the yard secured a contract for three Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) of 306,000 dwt, also from a European client.
In 2024, Hengli Shipbuilding had already built four VLACs for its parent company, Hengli Group, primarily for the logistical needs of its petrochemical and textile activities. The contract announced today, however, marks a different strategic milestone: it is the first VLAC order from an independent international shipowner.
Since the beginning of the year, Hengli Heavy Industry has secured orders totaling 69 confirmed ships, along with four optional units. The portfolio includes, in particular, 38 VLCCs, 14 tankers, eight container ships (plus two options), seven Capesize (plus two options), as well as the two recently announced VLACs.
This dynamic illustrates the shipyard’s ability to diversify its order book while consolidating its presence in strategic energy segments, at a time when the markets for ammonia and alternative fuels are attracting growing interest in the context of the maritime energy transition.
