Amazon Freight has expanded its dry van trailer fleet to 80,000 units, adding 10,000 trailers since June last year in a move designed to increase flexibility and improve service responsiveness.

The company said the additional capacity will help shippers manage peak season demand and enable faster response times for urgent shipments.

General manager Ari Silkey said each additional trailer enhances the company’s ability to deliver reliable and efficient transport solutions.

The expansion comes at a time when supply chains continue to face shifting consumer demand patterns, resource constraints and ongoing pressure to balance cost and service quality.

Amazon has also equipped its trailers with tracking technology, improving shipment visibility, execution reliability and reducing theft risk.

Industry analysts suggest the move could have broader implications for pricing and competition. With increased capacity, Amazon may be able to optimise utilisation and offer competitive rates, potentially influencing market dynamics.

However, the outlook remains uncertain. While there had been signs that the freight recession was easing, rising diesel prices linked to geopolitical tensions have dampened optimism.

At the same time, structural constraints remain. LTL capacity has not fully recovered since the closure of Yellow Corp. in 2023, and truckload capacity has tightened due to regulatory changes such as English-language requirements for drivers.

If supply and demand conditions align, Amazon’s expanded capacity could play a significant role in shaping the next phase of the freight market.
